Class N Permit Processing Time in Kenya
Official processing time is not fixed. Use a practical planning range of about 4 to 8 weeks for complete and well-supported applications, while allowing extra time for eFNS queries, document correction, embassy no-objection letters, income verification and Immigration workload.
| Stage | Practical timeline | What affects timing? |
|---|---|---|
| Document preparation | 3–10 working days | Availability of employer letter, embassy no-objection letter, accommodation proof and income records. |
| eFNS filing | Same day once documents are complete | Accuracy of Form 25, scan quality and portal availability. |
| Immigration review | Often 4–8 weeks as a planning range | Workload, queries, verification of income and clarity of remote work evidence. |
| Payment and issuance | After approval and invoice generation | Prompt payment and compliance with eFNS instructions. |
Class N Permit Validity and Renewal
The Class N Digital Nomad Permit is issued for one or two years and is renewable. Renewal is not automatic. The applicant should continue to meet the remote work, foreign income, accommodation and compliance requirements at the time of renewal.
Renewal preparation
- Start renewal planning before the permit expires.
- Prepare updated bank statements or payslips.
- Confirm continued foreign employment, foreign company role or outside-Kenya client work.
- Update accommodation evidence and current immigration status.
- Prepare fresh cover letters where required.
Class N Restrictions and Compliance Risks
The Class N permit is not a general Kenyan employment permit. The applicant should avoid activities that make the file look like local employment, local trading, local client work or unlicensed professional practice in Kenya.
| Issue | Safe position | Risk area |
|---|---|---|
| Local employment | Work remotely for a foreign employer or foreign clients. | Taking employment with a Kenyan company may require a different permit class. |
| Kenyan clients | Keep services tied to clients located outside Kenya. | Local client work may be treated as local business or professional activity. |
| Business activity | Use Class N for foreign company/foreign-client remote work. | Operating a Kenyan business may require company registration and a different immigration route, such as Class G where applicable. |
| Professional services | Confirm sector rules before advising, practicing, treating, engineering or providing regulated services. | Regulated professions may require local licensing or clearance. |
Common Mistakes That Delay Class N Applications
- Using weak or generic cover letters that do not explain the remote work arrangement.
- Submitting income records that do not match the employment contract or client evidence.
- Failing to include the no-objection letter from the local embassy of the home country.
- Uploading accommodation proof that does not show the applicant’s name, address or relevant dates.
- Applying as a digital nomad while describing local Kenyan employment or local trading.
- Leaving out company contact details such as physical address, telephone number, email and contact person.
- Uploading poor-quality scans or mismatched passport/name details.
- Not monitoring eFNS dashboard and email notifications after submission.
